So You’ve Read ‘Breaking Dawn,’ Now What? Plus: Congrats, Larry!

Larry Carroll and the 'Twilight' cast (in cardboard form)By Sabrina Rojas Weiss

First, an announcement: This week, the “Twilight” universe welcomed a new member to its family, and we’re pretty sure this one isn’t going to be drinking blood or causing a major political rift in the immortal world anytime soon. Larry Carroll’s wife Carrie gave birth to their son Jack on Thursday evening, and mom and baby are doing fine! Everybody send in your congratulations to the happy family here. And relax, most of your “Twilight” news will still be coming from Mr. Awesome, though you’ll also have to put up with some coverage from me and the rest of the MTV News team for the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, over at MTV.com, we have Stephenie Meyer’s reaction to the apparent backlash to “Breaking Dawn.” Personally, I hate to see people hurt her feelings so much. But everyone’s entitled to express their opinions, so please continue to do so.

Whether you loved or hated “BD,” I’m sure many of you are struggling with the same thing I am now that I’ve finished it: What do we do now? Other than read it again and read every scrap of news related to the movie while counting down the hours to December 12, I mean. I’m kind of in a daze now, constantly replaying the events of the entire series in my head over and over, and I’d like to snap out of it soon!

So what are you doing, Twilighters? Writing fan fic? Creating new Spunk Ransom blogs? Reading (gasp!) other books? Staring into the eyes of your newborn child? Let us know how you’re coping here!

Robert Pattinson Composing ‘Bella’s Lullaby’ For ‘Twilight’ Movie

Posted on Apr 22, 2008 09:00:53 AM

Robert PattinsonIn the Stephenie Meyer novel “Twilight,” many scenes compete for the most romantic moment, but many agree that the winner is when Edward Cullen sits down at a piano and plays a heartfelt song written for his love Bella.

With the film version on its way, an army of fans have been lobbying Meyer and director Catherine Hardwicke on the songs they think should be used as “Bella’s Lullaby.” Now, we finally have an answer – and as life imitates art, it should get Twilighters squealing in anticipation.

“Yes, it does exist in the movie,” Kristen Stewart told me while I was interviewing her and Robert for the article that just went live here, on the topic of “Bella’s Lullaby.” “And cutely enough, Rob is writing it on the piano as we speak.”

For those unaware, Robert Pattinson has a musical background; as such, Hardwicke has asked the 21-year-old to come up with an original composition. “I was doing music before I started acting, so I still have bits and pieces, and I’ve been playing in Portland [during the shoot],” he revealed. “I’ve been trying to write an album for years and years.”

“I told him he should write one, and let’s see if we can make it work, because that would be really cool if it was Rob’s song,” Hardwicke said of the lullaby. “He’s a beautiful musician, a very creative soul, very similar to Edward. He just totally reads the most interesting stuff, and sees the most interesting movies, and is very introspective and diving into his existential self.”

When I interviewed Meyer separately, she was delighted but surprised by the news. “That’s something I didn’t know,” she admitted. “I’ve never heard him play, so it’s kind of hard to say [whether his lullaby will be as I imagined it]. If it worked out right, it would be really cool.”

“He can play piano, so it’ll be great,” Stewart promised. “It’s going to be really good.”

In fairness, however, Hardwicke said she can’t commit to Pattinson’s song until he presents her with the finished product. “Maybe Rob’s song will win the contest,” she cautioned. “Or, maybe another song will.”

Meyer might welcome that scenario, as the author/music lover said she’d always hoped the gig could go to the lead singer for her beloved band, Muse. “Personally, I don’t think anybody could do a better job than Matthew Bellamy, because he is an amazing composer and his instrumental stuff is just the way Edward should play, because its so complicated,” Meyer observed. “It almost sounds like you’d have to have two people playing to get that level of sound. So, that would be my favorite.”

“But,” she added, keeping an open mind, “If Robert could write a lullaby, that would definitely add to some of the mystique of the movie, wouldn’t it?”

Would you like to see Robert sing his original song as the lullaby? Or would you rather have someone like Bellamy writing it? Cast your vote, Twilighters, and don’t forget that the people involved with the film read our boards!

EXCLUSIVE: New ‘Twilight’ Footage Goes Behind The Scenes, Fulfills Dreams

Posted on Apr 20, 2008 01:18:34 PM

'Twilight'“This looks just right.”

Our friends at Summit Entertainment premiered a mind-blowing new “Twilight” clip for the lucky crowds at New York’s Comic-Con this weekend, featuring that quote from a set-visiting Stephenie Meyer. Quite frankly, we’re inclined to agree.

Now, we’re passing the clip on to you, along with a warning: For all of you who’ve memorized every line of the novels, hungered for each tidbit of info you can find on our site, and cursed every month between now and December, please make sure you’re sitting down as you press play. Also, a crash helmet might come in handy. (CLICK HERE TO PLAY IT, AND RETURN TO READ THE REST…)

The tasty video tidbit yet begins with footage of Jackson Rathbone swinging a baseball bat, and leads into several others shots from the beloved baseball scene. Not only do you get a look at the uniforms that clad the Cullens, but you also get a quick peek at a showdown that looks half Rugby-scrum, half Jets vs. Sharks-like rumble.

Feel free to indulge in your shrieking as you glimpse Edward kissing Bella’s head in the hospital, giving her the “I want to kill you/no I don’t” stare in Biology class, and getting ready to give her a piggyback up a tree with the warning “You’d better hold on tight, spider-monkey!” OMG, Robert just spoke without his accent! And, could this be the beginning of the notorious “treetops” scene)?

Giving us what might be an early peek at the film’s marketing campaign, we get the tagline “When you can live forever, what do you die for?” and uber-cool trading cards introducing Bella, Edward, Dr. Carlisle Cullen, Esme, Alice, Emmett, Rosalie and…wait for it…The Nomads!

Try not to give your computer a meltdown with all the pause-play-pause you’ll use to glimpse at footage like the wire work, the vampires using movie magic to walk quickly towards the camera, what looks to be a Slip ‘n Slide, some poor dude getting his head ripped off, and a sweet preview of Bella’s scream.

“Not one shot is easy,” grins director Catherine Hardwicke in the clip. “I love it. Welcome to Twilight!”

What’s your favorite shot in the clip? Anything look particularly authentic or incorrect to you? Discuss, Twilighters!

You’ve watched the brand-spankin’ new set visit video so many times that “I don’t know; they’ve got brooms!” is your new personal catchphrase. You’ve read so much about Stephenie Meyer’s cameo in the “Twilight” film that you’ll know exactly where to look for her come December 12. Maybe you’ve even posted some very nice things about yours truly, which I completely appreciate — although let’s be honest, MTV Movies Blog reader “Lyndsay”: a “worldwide Larry Carroll Appreciation Day” just seems to be shooting a tad high. Hell, I doubt my wife would even celebrate it.

Now, get ready to feast like a blood-thirsty vegetarian vampire circling a wounded deer: A more detailed, written version of our visit to the Portland set just went live, revealing even more details about the flick.

You might also notice that throughout the piece, we’re calling the “Twilight” fanbase one name. And that’s because our recent “Twi-Hards, Twilighters or Something Else?” poll has officially come to a close!

Thanks to all the thousands of “Twilight” fans who voted. Check out the video above for a very special message from Robert, Kristen, Kellan and Nikki just for you!
