Battlestar Galactica TV Movie Event To DVD Release

Posted on Aug 8, 2008 12:47:31 PM | Filed under: News Chat

Around these parts we do love our Battlestar Galactica. Oh sure some of you complain that it is a TV Show and so it doesn’t have a place on a MOVIE blog, then John has to pull rank and we talk about it anyways.

Well now we find out that our beloved Battlestar Galactica has reason to be on this blog because they are making a feature TV movie event that will then be set for a DVD release right after the series finishes its run next year. That’s movie enough for me!

ComingSoon says:

Starting before the events of the miniseries, our story focuses on familiar characters including Cylon Number One, known as Cavil (Stockwell), Resistance Leader Sam T. Anders (Trucco) and Chief Galen Tyrol (Douglas). In the beginning, the Cylons had a plan, but it didn’t account for one thing: survivors. During the chaotic aftermath of the destruction, two powerful Cylon agents struggle with plots and priorities on the human ships that got away, and among the resistance fighters who were left behind.

Interesting that two of the Final Five will be featured in a story long before they were discovered. Maybe they will reveal why they were kept a secret.

For me, I really want to see the story of Helo and the freedom fighters left behind on earth. There isn’t much to tell that would deserve its own series, but a DVD release much like Battlestar Galactica: Razor would be the perfect way to tell it.

Perhaps more of these one shot DVD Releases will fill in the stories of the surviving human race and we will continue to get more Battlestar Galactica fixes. Sure there is always the planned series Caprica, but that looks to be of a different strain of story, set generations before Battlestar Galactica.

Columbia Pictures picks up Maximum Ride

Posted on Aug 8, 2008 12:23:08 PM | Filed under: News Chat

Maximum Ride a book series aimed at young adults and now it is being adapted to the big screen.

MovieWeb gives us

Don Payne (Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer) has been tapped to adapt for the big screen. The story revolves around six young children who have been genetically mutated so that 2 percent of their DNA is of a bird, which enables them to fly. They escape their secret government testing lair and are hunted down by “Erasers”, who are part human and part wolf.

Maximum Ride just sounds like the wrong name for this project. At first instinct I thought this was going to be about cars or something that you RIDE, but after reading the synopsis I see that is not the case. The main character’s name is Max Ride. Guess you can’t pick the name you are born with.

And apparently all it takes is to alter 2% of the human DNA to make it possible to GROW WINGS! I would have thought it would be more than that, but they are pretty specific it is just 2%.

The series is aimed at a younger adult crowd (read: Late teens) so maybe thats why the hook just isnt grabbing me.

Avi Arad is producing, so perhaps that’s why it has a little bit of Mutants vs Mutants vibe going on and I am normally down for that, but this just misses the mark for me.

Have any of the International Friends read any of these books? Is the story any good?

Pitt Officially on Inglorious Bastards

Posted on Aug 8, 2008 12:00:30 PM | Filed under: News Chat

And then there were three.

In a casting extravaganza Tarantino proves that he is determined to get Inglorious Bastards a cast. And we can lay to rest all the Brad Pitt rumours. He is in!

Today we get word that Brad Pitt has signed on the dotted line and will star in Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards and joining him in early casting are Eli Roth (director of Hostel) and B.J. Novak (”The Office”, Knocked Up).

Pitt will play a Tennessee hillbilly who assembles a team of eight Jewish-American soldiers. Eli Roth will play the role of Sgt. Donnie Donowitz, and Tarantino is locking in the other seven American actors who make up the Bastards team. Novak is expected to play PFC Utivich, described as a soldier of slight build who comes from New York.

I have to admit, I am not much of a Tarnatino fan. He hits about 50/50 with me, so while I don’t hate him I just don’t get pumped about his films unless I hear some good buzz after it comes out.

So it is saying alot that with Brad Pitt on board combined with that killer premise (who doesnt wanna see rednecks beat up Nazis???) I am starting to look forward to this.

I would be 100% on it with DiCaprio, but Tarantino is seeking a German Actor to play that part.

Flash Gordon back on Track

Posted on Aug 8, 2008 11:50:03 AM | Filed under: News Chat

It looks like that forgotten reboot project Flash Gordon has picked up steam again. Seems this week is all about those movies they forgot to follow up on getting news. Well two people you have never heard of managed to get Sony to sign them on to write the script, and Hearst no longer has the rights so Sony is running with it!

Yahoo Says:

“Flash Gordon” centers on a young polo player who is kidnapped and taken to the distant planet Mongo, where he and companions Dale Arden and Hans Zarkov embark on a series of adventures fighting a ruler named Ming the Merciless.

Sony’s “Flash,” a live-action film, follows in a 75-year tradition across many media for what began life as Alex Raymond’s comic strip; the property was a movie serial in the 1930s, a Sam Jones-toplined feature in 1980 and a recent Sci Fi Channel series.

Out of a lot of the pulp sci-fi out there I have never been a fan of Flash Gordon. I hope what happens here is much like Battlestar Galactica reboot, where they ditch all the camp and cheese and give us a solid enjoyable flick.

My big concern is the two writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. I had never heard of them, so Google to the rescue! Nothing outside a mention that the same team will bring us Dracula Year Zero. Which I find very little about short of a director announcement.

I am all for the little guy getting a foot in the door. And honestly Flash Gordon might be a sleeper hit, but unless they work some serious magic I am not getting too excited about it.
