A Journal By Any Other Name

My first screening of the year was “27 Dresses,” a rom-com starring Katherine Heigl, James Marsden and Edward Burns. 20th Century Fox just pushed back the chick flick’s release from Jan. 11 to Jan. 18, presumably to try and raise its profile with another round of paid sneaks next weekend. To me, “Dresses” was interesting principally as the first New York-set release from Fox in recent memory not to include even a cameo appearance — nary even a yellow delivery truck — by The Post (which, like Fox, is a division of News Corp). In the movie, Marsden plays a wedding columnist for the ficticious “New York Journal.” What caught my eye is that the New York Journal’s logotype is virtually identical to that of the Wall Street Journal, which News Corp. acquired not long ago. Prescience? Synergy? Well, there have been reports of discussions about changing the name of the Wall Street Journal to something…less financial sounding. So perhaps it’s a form of subliminal test marketing.
