Clint Eastwood’s “The Changling,” starring Angelina Jolie as the mother of a missing child during the Great Depression will make its world premiere be in competition at the Cannes Film Festival (Clint’t fifth). The not-quite-complete lineup unveiled today in Paris also includes Steven Soderbergh’s pair of Che Guvera pics starring Benicio del Toro (”Guerilla” and “The Argentine”), and Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (with Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, both of which Variety reported last week weren’t going to make the trip to the Riviera. (They were right about “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull,” “Kung Fu Panda” and Charlie Kaufman’s “Syndedoche, NY” starring Philip Seymour Hoffman debuting there). The trade paper had also tipped Barry Levinson’s Sundance flop “What Just Happened” with Robert DeNiro as the closer for Cannes, but now says that may not happen. Cannes also didn’t announce the opening night attraction, which was long rumored to be “Sex and the City.” Elizabeth Snead reports on her fashion blog at the L.A. Times that Warners has opted for a far less costly London opening on May 13, the night before Cannes opens. Or is Warners just trying to cut a better deal with the Palais? Stay tuned.
