The slate for this year’s Cannes Film Festival won’t be announced for another month, but the IMDB is listing the premiere of Joel and Ethan Coen’s “Burn After Reading” as having its world premiere there on May 14. Described as a screwball comedy, it stars John Malkovich as an alcoholic CIA analyst who writes his memoirs, only to have a disc containing the book and all his notes stolen by his wife (Tilda Swinton), who is having an affair with their mutual friend, a Treasury Department marshal played by George Clooney. The starry cast also includes Frances McDormand (Mrs. Joel Coen) and George’s pal Brad Pitt. According to the IMDB, the flick is scheduled for its U.S. release in September, though we wouldn’t be surprised it if has a date at the New York Film Festival. “No Country for Old Men” premiered last year in Cannes and later turned up in Toronto and at the NYFF. As Roger Friedman reported earlier this week, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” is also expected to bow at the French Riviera fest. Variety’s report today has a question mark in the headline, but the actual story states unequivocally that the Harrison Ford blockbuster “will premiere” on May 18, four days before it hits theaters worldwide. Other titles being buzzed about include Bryan Singer’s “Valkyrie” with Tom Cruise, “Wanted” starring Angelina Jolie, the animated “Kung Fu Panda,” Larry Charles’ documentary “Religious” with Bill Maher and if it’s ready in time, possibly Charlie Kaufman’s directing debut “Syndoche, N.Y.” with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Michelle Williams.
