No, We Can’t Review Every Single Movie Anymore

Up until two or three years ago, it was possible for The Post to review every single movie that opening in New York City. The number of releases has single exploded and we simply don’t have the time and the space to do that anymore. We have to make some tough choices, and occasionally we call then wrong, like when we passed on the political torture documentary “Taxi to the Dark Side,” which ended up winning the Oscar for documentary feature. ThinkFilm’s Mark Urman takes us (and the Daily News) to task for that in Gregg Goldstein’s Hollywood Reporter article about how the glut of releases is hurting some indie distributors. Here at the Post, we deal with the time pressures by watching some of the smaller flicks on screeners. ThinkFilm has been less cooperative than some other distributors about providing them, for reasons Urman discusses in the piece. But while screening movies on TV at home is less than ideal, sometimes it’s better than not reviewing at all. And as I tell Gregg, we haven’t had a single complaint from readers, only from distributors and publicists. We continue to review as many movies as possible; there are nine reviews in today’s Post.
