Oscar Watch: Soderbergh’s ‘Che’ Biopic Inches Toward U.S. Deal

Looks like Mr. Guevara will be up for the Oscars after all. Four offers from U.S. distributors are reportedly “on the table’ for Steven Soderbergh’s two part, four-hour biopic “Che,” according to Gregg Goldstein of the Hollywood Reporter, who…

Gregg also reveals that Mark Cuban’s 2929 Productions is not surprisingly turning over another Cannes premiere, “Two Lovers” over to its sister company Magnolia for distribution early in ‘09 after its hopes for a $3.5 million outside deal failed to materialize. Magnolia is also distributing another 2929 dud, “What Just Happened,” which failed to generate excitement at either Sundance or Cannes despite a cast headed by Robert DeNiro, Sean Penn and Bruce Willis. “Two Lovers,” a mopey romantic drama set in Brooklyn with Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow, achieved a degree of notoriety when EW’s Lisa Schwartzbaum declared before its mobbed Cannes press screening that “I’m not going to wait an hour for a f–ing James Gray movie.”
